Book Review Friday.

It is hard for me to believe that I once hated reading. Thanks to my wonderful mother who didn’t give up on me, but faithfully read to me, I eventually became a complete and total bookworm. While I may no longer be able to read 500 pages a day like I did before I was married with kids, reading is still my activity of choice.

Things have changed over the years. In my early 20s, unless it was a history book, non fiction books were not something I ever chose to read. Now as I am in my late 30s I find myself drawn more and more to non fiction books. Bible commentary, theology and christian living are starting to take up equal spacing on my book shelf.

When I decided to start a blog, it didn’t take long for me to remember one of the first things I started writing as a teen. Book Reviews. I loved doing it and always thought “this would be a dream job right here”

I may not be getting paid, but a creative outlet talking BOOKS?! Sign me up! Enter Book Review Fridays. Every Friday I will be featuring a different book. It might be fiction. It might be non fiction. It might be a new release, it might not be. But hopefully together we can discover old and new titles to add to our collections.

I have realized that many Christian fiction novels out there have things in them that we might want to avoid, or be aware of when recommending a book to a teen. Unfortunately descriptive sexual content is not immune from being in christian fiction. I have also noticed an increase in profanity, twisted or completely no faith elements, characters basically living together before marriage and the worst was a suggestive line about a man being attracted to her looking “barely legal”.

We have plugged-in and ratings for movies, but what is out there for bookworms? We don’t know what is in the book until we are already reading it. I don’t like it when I pick up yet another book with the trope of “They are married but waiting to have sex because of____” for the entire plot of the book to be leading to them having sex. A book dedicated to pages of foreplay and sexual tension, is what many christian romance authors have turned to.

Sexual elements aside, there is now an increase in spiritual elements that are in direct opposition of a biblical worldview. New Spirituality is on the rise, but in “christian packaging”

Now I’m not talking about differences in theology but a different theology and worldview altogether. When that happens where do we turn to? What source is there to know what content is in a book BEFORE we read it? After all, we all have limited time to devote to reading. Well look no further! That is what I aim to provide.

For nonfiction books I will be recommending will be ones that have deepened my faith. Be the Bible commentary, apologetics, archaeology, Christian living, etc.

If you have a christian book, fiction or non fiction, you would like me to review please feel free to email me your request.
