Lynn Austin is one of the few authors that can weave a story in such a balanced way. The Wish Book Christmas is a charming story and sequel to If I Were You.
Synopsis
Eve and Audrey, single mothers in the early 50s, are preparing for the holiday season when the Sears Christmas Wishbook is delivered. Soon their two young boys are glued to the magazine certain that Santa will bring them everything on their list. A list that is growing with every page turn! It soon becomes apparent that they boys are becoming entitled and demanding and their mothers are determined to teach them the true meaning of Christmas.
Eve is haunted by her past and determined to pay every last cent she believes she owes to her friend Audrey. While she doesn’t want her son to grow up entitled, she is also worried he will be disappointed on Christmas morning and she is heartbroken she can’t do more.
Audrey is determined to live her life exactly as her late husband had planned, not taking the time to question if that is life she now wants to live as a single mother. Afraid to live and love again, Audrey must come face to face with the emotional shrine she has built.
Both women struggle to move on from the past to embrace the future or any relationship that might come with it.
Conclusion
The Wish Book Christmas is a wonderful story that addresses not only the consumerism of this season and how it can get out of control, but also celebrating gift giving and receiving in the spirit it is suppose to be a reflection of.
If you are looking for a book that takes you back to the true meaning of Christmas and what some of our traditions symbolize, The Wish Book Christmas is the perfect novel this holiday season.
