There are a few things more relaxing than an iced coffee, the sound of wind gently blowing through the leaves of a tree, as your imagination takes flight in the wings of a good book. Although for most of us, this idealistic view is more what we fantasize about sitting down with a good book to look like, not reality. Maybe you are young and single and love getting lost in the pages of a good book. Maybe you are sneaking in a few chapters while you wait for your kids in the car, AC blasting. Perhaps it is a few moments while your baby is asleep. Or maybe a way to fill your day now that those days of rushing are far behind you. Wherever you may find yourself this summer, a book is an easy companion to bring along and more relaxing than the endless scrolling we often find ourselves sucked into.
There are many types of books, from light and romantic to deep and thought-provoking. I love them all. Authors that suck you so deep into a story you laugh and cry. Others that offer up something lighter, an enjoyable escape that doesn’t take over your every thought. Mystery, Adventure, Historical, and a splash of romance. My tastes are far and wide.
I think finding authors we enjoy is a bit like drinking coffee. Some people like black coffee only. Some prefer a splash of cream or sugar. Others still will enjoy anything that remotely resembles coffee. I think this is the most difficult part of recommending a book to someone. What one person loves, another person will not. When I was putting this list together, I wanted to choose a variety of genres. So without further ado….
1 – A River Between Us Historical Fiction

Historical fiction has always been a favorite genre of mine, and A River Between Us is beautifully written. Set during the civil war, her descriptions make the setting come alive without being overly wordy. Even years later, I can vividly recall several scenes as if I had watched a movie. 2 – Ribbon of Years Contemporary Fiction

Ribbon of Years is one of those books that has stuck with me for decades after I read it. There is so much I love about this book. Following the story of one woman’s life, we get glimpses into the events that shaped her. Perhaps it stuck with me because it reminded me of a question my father once asked a sweet and joyful elderly woman at church. He asked her, “How do you have so much JOY?” She answered, “Through much pain and suffering.” This story highlights the different moments that shape us, good and bad. As we look back on the events of our lives and those that form us into who we are, it often leaves me wondering, “What would I put in my memory box?”
3- The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip
Contemporary Fiction

Sara Brunvold’s debut novel is one of the best stories I have read in the past decade. Contemporary fiction isn’t one I often read, but this book inspired me to take a closer look at more in the genre. Winner of both the Christy Award and Carol Award, this novel does not disappoint. I loved the contrast between the enthusiasm of youth and the wisdom of age. For my full book review, click here.
4 – The Inn on Hanging Hill Murder Mystery

A crime novel with a different twist. This book reminded me a bit more of a classic “who-done-it”. It was a refreshing change from many crime novels, which often have more plot holes than Swiss cheese. While it might not have been free from all plot holes, it is one of the better I have read in this genre. Although, this does seem to be a genre within Christian fiction with limited choices.
5 – This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness Spiritual Suspense

If you have been around a while, you have no doubt heard of best selling author Frank Peretti. Published in 1986 and 1989, these books have stood the test of time, selling more than 6 million copies combined. This Present Darkness was on the CBA top best sellers list for over 150 consecutive weeks, and Piercing the Darkness won the ECPA Gold Medal Medallion Book Award for best fiction in 1990. Genre- Spiritual Suspense. If you love a longer book can can keep track jumping from one character to the next, this book is for you.
